Settlement in Oak Cliff dates back more than 150 years. This stately neighborhood in downtown Dallas is known for its towering oak trees and turn-of-the-century homes. Oak Cliff began as its own town but was annexed by Dallas in 1903 due to financial hardships. The neighborhood was developed when a 320-acre farm was subdivided, and the first lots were sold in 1887. Houses were built in Oak Cliff over decades, with styles ranging from 1950s homes to early 1900s architecture.
Often called “The OC” or “The Cliff,” Oak Cliff in southwestern Dallas encompasses a number of neighborhoods south of the Trinity River except west Dallas. Oak Cliff is bordered by Interstate 30 and the Trinity River on the north, Camp Wisdom Road on the south, Cockrell Hill Road on the west, and Interstate 35E on the east. The neighborhood is in zip code 75208.
Oak Cliff is filled with parks, including the Stevens Park Golf Course. The Dallas Zoo is in eastern Oak Cliff, and a number of neighborhood parks are scattered throughout the blocks of the community. Martin Weiss Park has a playground, picnic tables, and a gym, as well as tennis courts, softball fields, and an outdoor swimming pool.
Convenience stores and small grocery stores are located throughout Oak Cliff. Wynnewood Village in the southeastern corner of the neighborhood has many specialty shops, restaurants, and a grocery store. Some of the best shopping in Dallas is 25 minutes north at Galleria Dallas.
Downtown Dallas is about a 20-minute commute from Oak Cliff on Interstate 30. This area is the city’s business center and home to corporations such as Bank of America and Comerica Bank.
