North Central Neighborhood
North Central is a neighborhood in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, on the Charleston peninsula. This transitional neighborhood has undergone some significant improvements lately, with more renovation projects planned for the future. Home styles here include craftsman-style bungalows and cottages, as well as freedman-style homes. North Central is in the 29403 zip code area, within Charleston County.
The North Central neighborhood extends to Mount Pleasant Street on the north and Congress Street on the south. On the west, it is bounded by Rutledge Avenue, and on the south it extends to Interstate 26.
Just outside of neighborhood boundaries to the west is Hampton Park. This historic city park offers a beautiful man-made pond with a fountain feature, as well as lovely gardens. Paths are available for walking, jogging, and biking. Other amenities include baseball/softball fields, a playground, and picnic area. A variety of smaller parks and playgrounds are also situated within easy walking distance of North Central.
Adjacent to Hampton Park on the west is The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, one of many higher education options within Charleston. Other options within walking distance of North Central include the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston, both situated to the south. The medical university features the Roper Hospital, a convenient health-care option for North Central residents.
Other attractions near the North Central neighborhood include the Charleston Museum on Meeting Street and the South Carolina Aquarium on Aquarium Wharf. The latter offers a variety of entertaining and educational exhibits, including a unique albino alligator exhibit. There is also a 4-D theater at the aquarium. The downtown area also features a variety of historic museum homes. These National Landmarks are run by the Charleston Museum and offer beautiful examples of traditional southern architecture and period furnishings.
