Outer West Ashley Neighborhood

When English colonists first came to Charleston in 1670, they settled an area west of the Ashley River. Local Native Americans helped the colonists, leading them to what they considered suitable ground for a settlement. That area is now the Charles Towne Landing, a state historic site that includes 664 acres. It features picnic tables, 80 acres of gardens, the historic Legare-Waring House, hiking trails, a zoo, an exhibit hall, replica cannons, and a replica tall ship. Charles Towne Landing is located in West Ashley, the name reflecting its location in Charleston, South Carolina.

West Ashley is one of Charleston’s most-loved and largest neighborhoods. It is a community known for its amazing river views, moss-draped oak trees, and historic architecture. It is also home to the Citadel Mall, the largest mall in the region. The West Ashley Greenway is a rail trail that runs through the neighborhood. This is an unpaved path popular with walkers, joggers, and cyclists.

When looking for apartments in West Ashley, keep in mind that this large neighborhood is actually a collection of smaller neighborhoods — well over 50 of them. West Ashley is directly across the river from Downtown Charleston and its attractions. The southern border is Wappoo Creek, which connects the Ashley River to the Stono River, located along the western edge of the neighborhood. Bees Ferry Road borders the neighborhood to the north. Living in a West Ashley apartment, you’ll be just minutes from beautiful downtown Charleston as well as popular area beaches, including Folly Beach.
