Hickory Hall Apartments for Rent
Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the Hickory Hall neighborhood is largely a residential area. The area offers several playgrounds, an assisted living facility and is surrounded by areas that are rich in history.
One of the highlights of this neighborhood is the Shadowmoss Golf Club. Awarded one of Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Golf” in 2008, the course is constructed on a piece of land that once served as a plantation. Shadowmoss is a semi-private course offering not only golf but a variety of other activities. Membership benefits include private golfing as well as golf lessons.
Another sight that many will want to investigate in this area is the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge. The bridge was originally constructed in the 1920s and was also known as the Cooper River Bridge. In 2005, the bridge failed all safety tests and deconstruction began. The bridge has since been replaced.
The history of the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge is quite fascinating, having been built by a consortium of engineers. The bridge was to be financed through tools, and it cost nearly six-million dollars to build. The State of South Carolina bought the bridge from Cooper River Bridge, Inc. in 1946. At that time they removed the toll.
This bridge suffered more than its share of damage – in fact, the same year the state bought the bridge, a 240 foot section was torn out when a freighter hit the bridge. In 1979 the bridge became obsolete although it would be several years (2005) until a replacement was built. The destruction of the bridge took nearly two years.
