The remnants of Fort Lamar are located in a preserve within walking distance of this neighborhood. The Union wanted to control Charleston; to that end they attacked the forts on James Island in 1862. The men at Fort Lamar were able to defeat the Union troops, giving the Confederacy a much-needed win. This is a very historically significant place in Charleston history.

Hot Wheels Skate Center is a roller skating rink located a short drive from the neighborhood. This is a great place to hold a private party such as a birthday or other event. Open skating is offered on specific days. They have skate rentals for the entire family.

Residents who want to go grocery shopping don’t need to drive far. There is a Piggly Wiggly on State Highway 171/Folly Road. This road is one of the main roads on James Island and has a variety of services, retail establishments, and restaurants.

James Island Elementary School is located a short drive from Fort Lamar. Classes are offered for students in grades Pre K-5. They receive a Great Schools rating of 7/10.
