The Citadel Woods subdivision is located in the West Ashley area of Charleston. The city of Charleston annexed the first patch of land in West Ashley in 1960. The area has grown into a thriving suburban-like community ever since. It has been a place in which shopping areas that couldn’t be developed in the historic parts of Charleston have been able to take root.

West Ashley is located just across the Ashley River from the Citadel Military College (or more simply, the Citadel). It is one of six senior military colleges in the United States. Citadel Woods is a newer subdivision that is located in West Ashley inside the Mark Clark area. It is also located near Charles Towne Landing. It is an area that features a mix of home styles and sizes. Most of the structures range in size from about 1,200 to about 2,000 square feet and represent a mixture of single and two story residences that were built between 1990 and about 2000. Home styles also vary, with a mix of traditional, ranch and other designs.

The area is characterized by spacious lots that are immaculately manicured and an abundance of trees and other greenery that give the community the feeling of being relaxing and peaceful, and a nice escape from the city center. It is also very convenient to a wealth of different shopping areas, including the Citadel Mall, the largest shopping center in the area.

Charles Towne Landing is a 663 acre area that lies along the banks of the Ashley River. It is said to be the place where settlers first stepped ashore. It has been preserved as a state historic site. Within that 663 acre area, there are beautiful gardens, a reproduction of a 17th century sailing vessel and other historical amenities. It is also the site of Charleston’s only zoo.
