Legend says that the neighborhood was the prize of Naval Officer George Anson, who in 1696 won the colonial land in a vivacious high-stakes card game with a prosperous local merchant. By 1840, the growing neighborhood was ruined when fire destroyed everything. Ansonborough was later rebuilt. Much of that rebuilding (including more than 100 pre-Civil War homes) still stands, creating the neighborhood of today.

With significant rehabilitation work undertaken in the 1960s, the neighborhood continues its tradition as a beautiful place to live. Most of the homes are brick or stucco, and many are Greek Revival or Georgian in design. Carriage houses and condos complement these classic styles.

Less than a five-minute walk away is Charleston’s most famous marketplace, which today sells everything from signature sweet-grass baskets to modern art to delicious meals. Charleston Market is one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations.
