Squirrel Hill North Neighborhood

The east end of Pittsburgh is home to the Squirrel Hills North neighborhood. Pittsburgh, known as the Most Livable City, is a vibrant cultural and educational center with several universities and teaching hospitals. It is also the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team. Residents of Squirrel Hill enjoy walking along Murray Hill Road, a cobblestoned road lined with historical turn of the century homes leading to Chatham University. Willow Cottage, built in 1860 by Thomas M Howe, was restored and is now the gatehouse for Chatham University. It is the oldest surviving property from 5th Avenue, once known as Millionaires Row.

This is a popular area of culturally diverse residents who are a mix of students, young families, singles, and seniors. Living in this urban community offers old fashioned grocery stores (with delivery), landmark taverns, upscale cafés and boutiques, and the Manor and Squirrel Hill movie theatres. Residents walk or bike within the neighborhood which even has a branch of the Carnegie Library.

Squirrel Hill residents are delighted with the choice of restaurants offering a wide variety of ethnic cuisine including Jewish, Russian, Ukrainian, Mexican, Italian, French, Thai, Asian and Argentine.

Residents have access to Schenley Park which borders Squirrel Hill. It is the home of Carnegie Museum and Library, Phillips Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Panther Hollow Lake. In addition, there is an ice skating rink and swimming pool. Activities are planned throughout the year including ice skating events and concerts on Flagstaff Hill in the summer.

Higher education opportunities for residents include Chatham University, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh campuses, some within walking or biking distance.
