Columbus at a Glance
Necko-Weinland Park Neighborhood
Necko-Weinland Park is considered part of the University District in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It consists of NECKO, a historic neighborhood that is part of the larger Near North Side Historic District, and Weinland Park, a trendy area featuring old factories that have been converted into lofts and businesses.
The historic neighborhood of Necko is located in the University Area, adjacent to The Ohio State University, one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive public universities. The community is bordered on the north by Medical Center Drive and West 8th Avenue, on the south by King Avenue, on the west by Cannon Drive, and on the east by Neil Avenue. This pedestrian-friendly community is also close to High Street and State Route 315; two major roadways in the area, as well as Downtown Columbus, Lennox Town Center, and Batelle Memorial Institute.
The Necko community was established in 1891 as part of the E.J. McMillen Homestead Addition. It is the only remaining piece of this homestead still standing today. Necko has been recognized for its eclectic architecture and unique neighborhood layout and became added to the Near North Side Historic District in 1980. Necko is an excellent example of an early 20th century residential neighborhood, with its brick exterior homes, grand front porches, elaborate front doors, and roof dormers that unify the community.
Batelle Memorial Institute lies directly south of Necko. This private applied science and technology company focuses on exploring emerging areas of science. In addition to operating three research facilities, the company also manages multiple national laboratories.
King Avenue Park and Olentangy River lie just west of Necko offering residents walking trails, ball fields, nature viewing, and water recreation activities.
A unique and newly added Necko amenity is the community garden. The neighborhood organized and built a wheelchair accessible garden in early 2010; this just goes to show the close-knit community ties and the amount of community involvement that is found here. This garden offers residents of Necko not only a place to grow fruits and vegetables, but a place residents can gather, socialize and get to know fellow community members.
Weinland Park was developed along a streetcar line in the 1930s. It is a beautiful community for renting an apartment, consisting of row-homes and apartment communities. There are more renters than homeowners in Weinland Park.
The neighborhood was named after Edgar L. Weinland, a member of Ohio State University’s first law class. He was a major force behind obtaining park space, which became Weinland Park. Because of its long history, there are several historic locations in Weinland Park, including Huckleberry House, Columbus Fire Station 7, and St. Sophia Orthodox Cathedral.
