Northwood Park Neighborhood

Surrounding the Ohio State University campus north of downtown Columbus is the University District, a diverse urban area that provides desirable living space for students as well as permanent residents. It includes opportunities in education, culture, sports, recreation, dining and entertainment. It was once the outskirts of Columbus and the homes and buildings date back to the 1840s with a myriad of architectural styles.

The University District is comprised of eight neighborhoods and one of those neighborhoods is Northwood Park, also known as the Northwood and Oakland Avenue neighborhood. Northwood Park’s boundaries are Patterson Avenue to the north, Northwood Avenue to the south, Pearl Street to the west and Indianola Avenue to the east. Sometimes the northern border is placed further up at Blake Avenue.

This tree-lined neighborhood’s homes were built between the early 1900s and the 1940s. The architectural styles are a mix of American Four Square, Classical, Prairie, Colonial and Craftsman. With its high percentage of owner occupancy and strong sense of community, Northwood Park features large homes, gardens, brick alleys and sidewalks. Needless to say, it’s an ideal area in which to walk and bike.

Nearby parks and recreation facilities abound including the Olentagy Trail extending 13.75 miles along the Olentagy River from Downtown Columbus in the south to Worthington Hills in the north. Activities on the trail include walking, jogging and running, biking, rollerblading and sightseeing.

Shopping, dining and entertainment areas near Northwood Park lie along the main thoroughfare of High Street located just a block west of Pearl Street. Northwood Park residents can attend the many concerts and other cultural programs at Ohio State University, The Wexner Center for the Arts, and Ohio Historical Society. Other events include the Ohio State Buckeye football and the Ohio State Fair on the OSU campus as well.
