The northern boundary is Refugee Road South/Performance Way/Frank-Refugee Expressway/James L. Wagner Memorial Parkway. Refugee Road is the southern boundary of the historical Refugee Tract, once land set aside in the late 1700s for people from Nova Scotia, Canada, who had lost their property because of their loyalty to the cause of the American Revolution. Most had sold their land warrants and moved to what became the city of Columbus.

The other boundaries are Alum Creek Drive on the east, Watkins Road on the south and South Cassidy Avenue on the west. An interstate exchange for the parkway/expressway is situated at Alum Creek Drive and Refuge Road. Berwick Plaza and Eastland Mall Shopping Center are located on Refugee Road east of Alum Crest Acres.

Three cemeteries, Agudas Achim, Beth Jacob and Tifcreth Israel, take up the northern half of the neighborhood. The residential area is south of the cemetaries.

Single family homes were built in this subdivision in the late 1950s and 1960s. Newer homes have been added over the last decades. Home prices range between $60,000 and $186,000. Amenities include driveways, garages, grassy lawns and mature trees.

Nearby public schools include Koebel Elementary, Beery Middle and Alum Crest High. Alum Crest Park, at 2575 S. Cassady Avenue, is a 4.59 acre park featuring a 0.3 mile asphalt walking loop, basketball court, picnic area and playground. A multi-use trail wanders along Alum Creek on the east. Three Rivers Park is located to the southeast.

Alum Crest Acres is surrounded by a number of industries including the huge Coca-Cola Company syrup plant at 2455 Watkins Road.
