Adjacent to Central Park in the heart of Manhattan, Barnard College enjoys an enviable location: along the Hudson River in Manhattan’s Morningside Heights neighborhood on the Upper West Side.

Barnard College was founded in 1889 as one of the Seven Sisters, a collection of private liberal arts colleges for women. Today, Barnard is one of the most selective women’s colleges in the country with an admission rate of only about 20 percent. The college is affiliated with Columbia University.

The campus includes the historic buildings of Milbank Hall, built between 1897 and 1898. The three red-brick buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The four-acre campus wraps around Lehman Lawn, a beautiful green space. Columbia University is located east of Barnard on the other side of Broadway. Riverside Park is located along the eastern side of the campus and includes dog runs, a basketball courts, tennis courts, and General Grant National Memorial.

Because New York City is one of the most walkable cities in the world and maintains one of the most comprehensive public transit systems, getting to Barnard College from anywhere in the city is easy. For those who want to live in an apartment in the Barnard College area, look in Morningside Heights and Manhattanville. Harlem, Upper Manhattan, Hamilton Heights, and the Upper West Side are also near the college.
