Located on a hill that is the highest point in south-central Kentucky, Western Kentucky University (WKU) is a beautiful campus with great views. In honor of the park-like 200 acre campus, the school’s nickname is the “Hilltoppers.”
Although the university was officially established in 1906, its roots can be traced back to 1875, when it was the Glasgow Normal School. After a move from Glasgow to Bowling Green and a few name changes, the university became the university it is today. The school is most noted for its award-winning journalism and photojournalism programs, which are considered to be among the best in the country.
The Hilltopper mascot is Big Red, and the sports teams belong to the Sun Belt Conference. WKU is most noted for their top-ranking swim team. They also have a respected basketball and baseball program. Both students and Bowling Green residents enjoy a robust football program. The Hilltoppers are in Division I and play at the Houchers Industries – L.T. Smith Stadium. The school colors are red and white.
