The Capitol, a two-story brick building, was built in 1792 and was named after Sir Walter Raleigh. A second building was completed in 1840. Known as the permanent seat of the North Carolina State Capitol, it is considered a fine example of the Greek revival architectural style. The rotunda has plaques and busts honoring the people and historic events of North Carolina. Included in the tribute are three signers of the Constitution and three signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Historic Oakwood neighborhood is the only 19th century neighborhood that exists in Raleigh. The architecture in the area includes Greek Temple, French Colonial and English Victorian. The neighborhood has drawn tourists since 1974. It is bordered to the north by Franklin Street, to the south by Edenton Street, to the east by Watauga Street, and to the west by Person Street.
