East Raleigh Neighborhood

East Raleigh covers roughly 30 blocks and contains homes dating back to 1900. Historic buildings in East Raleigh include Estey Hall, which was built in 1873 and is located on the campus of Shaw University. Leonard Hall, also located on the university campus, was built in 1881. The East Raleigh-South Park Historic District developed in the mid-1800s.

Shaw University is a private liberal arts university that was founded in 1865 as a historically black university, or HBCU. It is the oldest HBCU in the south. Shaw University is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention and it has a student population of around 2,000.

St. Augustine’s University is located in East Raleigh, as well. This university was established in 1867 and is a four-year, private liberal arts university. St. Augustine’s University enrolls about 1,100 students per year.

East Raleigh is located between downtown Raleigh and I-440. East Raleigh is home to the Raleigh Country Club and Holly Hill Hospital. This Since it is just east of downtown, resident of East Raleigh enjoy a convenient commute into the downtown district, which is home to the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and North Carolina State University.
