Cameron Village serves as one of Raleigh’s more iconic neighborhoods. All roads seem to lead to it’s main landmark, the Cameron Village shopping complex. A blended facility offering restaurants, gift boutique, clothing stores and two grocery stores, the complex is aimed at a community that is affluent, educated, and enjoys a good time.

The high spirits of the community can be seen in the crowds that make Sunday noon a social zone on the sidewalk cafe and the camaraderie of the table-sharers at the Cameron Village Library. Newly renovated, it is one of the most modern libraries in Raleigh, and plays host to the community groups and students of the area.

Students are in abundance. Most come from Brighton High School, which lies on the Saint Mary’s Street boundary of the neighborhood. Other main boundary streets include Oberlin Road, and Wade Avenue where it meets Saint Mary’s. Hillsborough serves as a main artery, but while some argue that it should serve as another boundary road, the residential nook of Cameron Village on the west side of the street would beg to disagree. Historically homes over to Warbrough Street up to the line of Pullen Street have been included.

Lines, of course, are not straight. The 27605 zip code that contains the area is known for its short and winding streets, lined with narrow single family homes that seem to be in a perpetual contest for best porch arrangement. Most are between 50 and 100 years old, with unique design features that include columns, brick-and-wood fronts, and large windows that allow the occasional glimpse of renovated hardwood interiors.

Residents spend evenings walking into the Cameron Village shopping center for a meal and a drink, catching sports events at Brighton High School, strolling over to Glenwood Avenue for nightlife or simply congregating on the corners with their neighbors. It’s a very social neighborhood and new residents will find it hard to stay a stranger here.
