Birchwood Hills is a small development area in Raleigh, just over the edge of the Inner Beltline. It is a newer part of the city. The area is a mixed-use community, with a greater emphasis on retail and commercial development than residential homes. A few large apartment complexes frame the outer edges of the zone, mostly in a modern block-style with neutral decor and landscaping.

The main attraction to the Birchwood Hills area is its proximity to the Crabtree Valley Mall. Until the opening of North Hills, this was one of Raleigh’s premier shopping destinations, pulling in traffic from surrounding communities as well as the central city. The heart of Birchwood Hills lies directly across from the entrance to Crabtree Valley Mall on Glenwood Avenue.

The area perches on the border of several zip codes within the Raleigh area. The bulk of the hotels, restaurants, and apartment complexes that make up Birchwood Hills lie in the 27612 zip code below Laurel Hills Park, with the rest of the community in the 27607 zip code between the Cliff Benson Beltway and the Raleigh-Chapel Hill Expressway. Some argue that the community extends into the 27606 zone, but this is the other side of Crabtree Valley and not generally considered connected with the rest of the community.

Large roadways and intersections characterize the area, with development zones perched on hills sliced open by Glenwood Avenue and the interchange between the Cliff Benson Beltway and the Raleigh-Chapell Hill Expressway. During commuting hours, traffic is heavy with delays and accidents, common. Though the off-road areas of Birchwood Hills are attractively landscaped, they are not friendly enough to walkers and joggers to attract a regular following.

For entertainment in the Birchwood Hills area, Crabtree Valley Mall events serve as anchor points. The many surrounding restaurants do a brisk weekend business, and holidays are a lively time for Birchwood Hills.
