Salem Woods is a residential neighborhood of Winston-Salem. The neighborhood is located southwest of the city and is close to the historic area of Bethabara Park. The 1753 site was founded by Moravians as a religious village and trade center. When residents and tourists visit Historic Bethabara Park, they will discover the North Carolina back country of more than 250 years ago. The park is a national historic landmark and a wooded 183-acre wildlife preserve. The preserve is home to 126 species of birds.
Costumed guides give tours of the 1788 church, archaeological ruins, reconstructed village and fort. Herb gardens reflect the site’s past. The visitor center has an introductory video and exhibits.
Visitors can take a walking tour of Winston-Salem’s historic west end. This historic neighborhood was designed in 1890 and was home to successful businessmen such as R. J. Reynolds of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The well-established neighborhood of curving streets and immaculate landscaping has examples of Queen Anne, Craftsman, and Victorian-style homes.
Another walking experience is available at the Hanes Mall. The mall was named for the Hanes textile dynasty, which was founded in 1905. Hanes Park is located in Winston-Salem’s west end and is a popular family park with areas for sporting events.
Downtown Winston-Salem has another pedestrian-friendly attraction. Building murals appear on the Chronicle Building, the Winston-Salem Transit Center, Winston Square Park, Trade and Fourth Streets, and Sixth and Trade Streets.
Winston-Salem contains 16 miles of greenways. Paved and unpaved trails, boardwalks and bridges link visitors with parks and other destinations. Dogs on leashes are allowed at all parks. Washington Park is the only dog park in the city.
