Outer Downtown Greensboro Neighborhood
Outer Downtown Greensboro is on the east side of downtown. This vibrant area is home to plenty of history, fantastic parks and golf courses, and all of Greensboro’s colleges and universities – the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Greensboro College, Bennett College, and North Carolina A&T State University. Outer Downtown Greensboro features several distinctive neighborhoods, including East Market Street B, Eastside Park, and Hampton Community.
The East Market Street B neighborhood sits between Highway 70/220, East Market Street, North English Street, and East Bessemer Avenue. The neighborhood is a mixed-use area with small, older frame cottages, apartment buildings, and commercial properties. Many of the homes off East Market Street date from the 1930s and 1950s.
The East Market Street B neighborhood is within walking distance to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University and often serves as off-campus housing. Public bus transportation is available on East Market Street. Another area landmark is Summit Shopping Center, which is a popular neighborhood shopping area. Kindred Hospital-Greensboro and Annie Penn Hospital are also convenient to the neighborhood. Railroad tracks run parallel to North English Street and East Market Street.
Barber Park is a popular neighborhood recreation area. The highlight of Barber Park is the 18-hole disc golf course that was created for the North Carolina State Games. The 109-acre park also offers a multi-use trail, picnic shelters, and a baseball stadium. Year-round indoor tennis and basketball is also offered in the park at their Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion.
Eastside Park is a charming Outer Downtown Greensboro neighborhood featuring a variety of apartments, shops, and businesses. Gillespie Street serves to bring the neighborhood residents to nearby businesses and services within moments. Following it brings one to East Market Street, just blocks away. Residents of Outer Downtown Greensboro enjoy being near downtown shopping, museums, entertainment venues, and colleges. Three museums are located in the area: the Greensboro Historical Museum, the Greensboro Children’s Museum, and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. A popular performance arts and concert venue, the Carolina Theatre, is also nearby.The city of Greensboro offers residents a variety of park and recreation facilities including neighborhood parks, larger natural regional parks, recreation centers, and watershed parks. Watershed parks surround lakes and many offer boating and fishing opportunities, as well as educational programs.
