Fayetteville, NC Apartments for Rent

Settled by Scottish immigrants in mid-1700s, Fayetteville has long been associated with the military. The city is named after General La Fayette, a French military hero who assisted the American Army during the Revolutionary War. But even before that, when the settlement was still known as Cross Creek, residents played a role in the early beginnings of the American Revolution. In 1775, roughly a year before the Declaration of Independence was written, a group of residents met at a Cross Creek tavern and drew up the Liberty Point Resolves. In it, the citizens stated, “…under our distressed circumstances we shall be justified before you in resisting force by force …” to secure freedom and safety.

Fayetteville is home to the second-oldest militia in the US, which formed in 1793 and still serves as a ceremonial unit.  During the Civil War in March 1865, General Sherman and his army attacked Fayetteville and destroyed the Confederate arsenal.  Nearby, the Battle of Monroe’s Crossroads, the last cavalry battle of the war, was fought.

Today, Fayetteville continues its military tradition – Fort Bragg is located on the northwest side of Fayetteville. This US army base, along with Pope Air Force Base, is the country’s largest military installation. Fort Bragg covers 251 square miles and is home to roughly 39,000. The US Army Airborne Forces, Special Forces, the US Army Forces Command, and the US Army Reserve Command are all located on Fort Bragg.

But even if you aren’t moving to a Fayetteville apartment for military-related reasons, this is a terrific city with plenty to offer. It is historic, diverse, and filled with friendly people and plenty to do. Fayetteville contains many museums, shops, restaurants, art galleries, cultural events, and more. Things to Do in Fayetteville:

Fayetteville is located on the Cape Fear River in central North Carolina in the Sandhills region, the area between the coastal plains and the Piedmont. It is the location of Carver’s Falls, the largest waterfall in the region. Fayetteville’s location and year-round moderate weather makes it ideal for enjoying the outdoors – and with its extensive parks system, you’ll have ample opportunity to do just that. Start at the Cape Fear Botanical garden, which is open year-round and is an absolutely beautiful location. Cape Fear Botanical Garden offers 77 acres of gardens, nature trails, and a natural amphitheater. In addition, the Garden hosts many year-round events, special exhibits, and concert series.

From there, be sure to visit one of the area’s many golf courses – there are more than 20 to choose from — or spend the day at Lake Rim Park, Arnette Park, or Mazarick Park.

If you love history, you’ll love Fayetteville! Visit Heritage Square to see several historic buildings, including Sandford House, which was built in 1797. The square also contains the Oval Ballroom, a unique must-see that was built around 1820, and the Nimocks House, built in 1804. All of the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

From there, head to the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex. The museum contains two floors of exhibits, featuring 400 years of history. The complex also contains Arsenal Park, where the remains of the Confederate Arsenal (destroyed by General Sherman in 1865) can still be seen. Finally, you can tour the 1897 Poe House, once owned by Edgar Allan Poe – but not that one. This Edgar Allan Poe was a local businessman, not a writer. The house museum highlights what life was like in the early 1900s.

Downtown Fayetteville is a terrific place to discover your favorite new coffee shop, tavern, sidewalk café, boutique, restaurant, pub, or art gallery. Stroll along brick-paved sidewalks and enjoy the public art displays, period lighting, and tree-lined streets. The Downtown Fayetteville Historic District contains several historic sites and markers.

The Crown Coliseum hosts many sports events, entertainment, and theater productions. This relatively new stadium seats more than 10,000. The Coliseum is part of the Crown Complex, an entertainment hub with five facilities. The other venues include a ballroom, theatre, arena, and expo center.

Once you’ve selected a Fayetteville apartment to rent, get ready for the Dogwood Fall Festival! This terrific event, held for three days every October, includes hour-long “Historic Hauntings” hayrides, a haunted house, a brew garden, food, and entertainment.

What to Consider When Moving to Fayetteville:

Fayetteville is a beautiful city filled with history and great locations. It also has a low unemployment rate of about 4 percent. The largest employers are Fort Bragg and Pope Field. Other employers include Goodyear Tire Company, Cumberland County Government, and Fayetteville Technical Community College. Fayetteville offers great shopping, dining, and entertainment. In fact, there are more than 1,500 shops in Fayetteville and over 400 restaurants.

Nicknamed the “City of Heroes,” Fayetteville’s backbone is the military. Fayetteville is the “World’s First Sanctuary for Soldiers and Their Families,” and roughly 500 volunteers watch over military families, offering one-to-one services and business discounts. Blue and white signs mark major roads, and soldiers in Cumberland County are provided with many local services. Because of its support for military families, Fayetteville was recognized by Time Magazine as “America’s Most Pro-Military Town.” Fayetteville is also an All-America City, winning the award multiple times.

Why Fayetteville Apartments Are Hot:

In a word (or two): Fort Bragg! This is a military city first and foremost, but it is also a family-friendly city, a city with a great arts scene, and a college town – it is home to Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College. Fayetteville is rich with history, offers great shopping, seven museums, award-winning golf courses, and has an exciting nightlife. Fayetteville is ideally located between the coast and the mountains, so you can enjoy weekend getaways to either once you’ve moved to your new apartment in Fayetteville.
