Beacon Hill is a National Historic District. It contains several architectural treasures, including the Rose Nichols House Museum, which is open to the public. The Massachusetts State House, built in 1795, is built at the top of the hill on pasture land once owned by John Hancock. Two gems in Boston’s Emerald Necklace are also located near Beacon Hill: Boston Common, America’s first park dating to the 1630s, and Boston Public Garden, the country’s oldest botanical garden.
