Downtown Des Moines Neighborhood in Des Moines, IA

Downtown Des Moines Neighborhood

The Downtown Des Moines neighborhood lies just south of I-235, with the Des Moines River and the Raccoon River forming much of the boundaries. West Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway runs through the south part of the neighborhood.

It is an interesting area of Des Moines, with elegant old homes along heavily shaded streets. One example of the original neighborhood is Hoyt Sherman Place, a museum. Sherman was one of the original founders of the city, and his mansion is still an art and antique lovers delight. The site also has a 1,400 seat ornate theater with great entertainment.

Downtown Des Moines is also an area of beautiful cathedrals, corporate offices, Federal Buildings, and entertainment venues. Many fine old buildings here have found new life as professional office space and fine dining establishments. The Des Moines Central Public Library and a major medical center are close by.

Mercy College of Health Sciences, Drake University, Des Moines University, and Des Moines Community College serve the area.

Bridges link this neighborhood to the eclectic shops and restaurants of Historic East Village, the River Walk, the State Capitol, and State Historical Museum.

The Science Center and IMAX Dome Theater, The Iowa Events Center, and Wells Fargo Arena are located in the northeast corner. The Civic Center is a few blocks south of those venues.

Jordan Creek Town Center is a bit west. Known as a regional mall, it is the largest in the state.

As both an historic district and an area where two rivers converge, the neighborhood is close to many parks and lakes. The Iowa Trails system runs along the river a bit west. A number of golf courses, both public and private, are a short drive away. State parks and reservoirs to the north are popular recreational areas, too.
