Deerwood Lake is a neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois. As the community’s name implies, a small lake lies within its borders. North Cotton Hill Drive is the main road in this area, while Deerwood Lake Drive is the primary road within the neighborhood. The community is basically residential and is governed by a homeowners’ association.

Deerwood Lake sits south of the main areas of Springfield. The surrounding area has a rural feel, with cornfields and woods instead of city streets. Large pine trees are prevalent within the community. Deerwood Lake and other neighborhoods in the vicinity are close-knit and private.

Businesses are sparse in the immediate vicinity, though residents don’t have to travel far to find them. A 15-minute walk south to Toronto Road offers a place to relax and to have a bite to eat. For those who are driving, the Interstate 55 cloverleaf is about a block from the neighborhood.

A half-mile trip north of Deerwood Lake leads to another commercial center, this one offering such things as gunsmithing, motor-sports services, and office supplies.

Just east of this business area is the University of Illinois Springfield campus. The 746-acre campus is one of three that belong to this world-class university. About 4,900 students are enrolled in its 23 degree programs.

Beyond the university, again to the east, are the abundant shores of Lake Springfield and all the recreation that 57 miles of shoreline and 4,200 surface acres of water can offer.

Downtown Springfield is about a six-mile drive north from Deerwood Lake.
