Just to the north of downtown Augusta, Georgia and close to the western bank of the Savanna River is the neighborhood of West End. It is a single-street neighborhood consisting of small, older one-story dwellings and outbuildings. The street is narrow, and there are a lot of trees in the area.
Schools in the area include Academy of Richmond County High School, Laney High School and Aquinas High School. Also nearby is Paine College and Augusta State University, which is an urban university that has a long tradition in liberal arts.
To the northeast of West End is the Augusta National Golf Club – home of the PGA Masters Tournament. It is one of the most famous golf courses in the world. Augusta National had been an exclusive members-only course for many years, but the course is now open to the public on Mondays only, unless they are preparing for a tournament such as the Masters.
A scant few miles away from West End is the 1,100-acre Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Amid the streams, swamps and wetlands are miles of trails and nature walks where visitors can view blue heron, bobcats, alligators, and turtles in a natural environment.
Augusta’s popular Nacho Mama’s restaurant specializes in several varieties of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and of course, nachos. Margaritas can be purchased by the pitcher.
The Country Club, with its huge dance floor, has been rated by its customers as the number one place to go in Augusta for nightlife.
