Augusta, Georgia, a city of more than 200,000, borders the state lines of Georgia and South Carolina. The city lies 140 miles north of Savannah and is home to the U.S. Army’s Fort Gordon. Located in Augusta-Richmond County, the city is also known as the Garden City of the South.
South of Augusta’s Central Business District is the neighborhood of South Turpin Hill. It is a city neighborhood, mixing residential structures with commercial businesses. There are several schools located in the neighborhood of South Turpin Hill, most within walking distance of living areas.
The Boys and Girls Club of Augusta can be found on Fifteenth Avenue in South Turpin Hill. The Cary J. Mays Community Center also is in the neighborhood on Eleventh Avenue. The center has facilities for basketball, picnicking, and a children’s playground, in addition to its community building and gymnasium.
The New Bethlehem Community Center is a few blocks north of South Turpin Hill. This center offers numerous community programs including after- school programs for kids, senior activities, GED classes, and wellness programs.
The Augusta Public Transit, which runs nine fixed routes, operates both the Number 4 and Number 6 routes through South Turpin Hill. The Number 4 route travels north into downtown Augusta and the Central Business District.
South Turpin Hill is less than two miles from the 64-acre Pendleton King Park. Located on Wrightsboro Road, the park features ball fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, and an 18-hole disc golf course. There are several trails for hiking, as well as seven diverse gardens. The Touch and Smell garden is a favorite learning place where all ages can study various herbs and plants by using their senses. For more extreme outdoor fun, the Augusta Skate Park on Damascus Road is five miles west of South Turpin Hill.
