Bounded by Walton Way, Druid Park Avenue, Wrightsboro Road, and Heard Avenue, the Academy Bake Avenue community sits in the heart of Augusta, Georgia. The residential neighborhood is within blocks of Augusta State University, Paine College, and one of the more unique landmarks in Augusta, The Academy of Richmond County. ARC was established in 1783 and has the distinction of being the south’s oldest public high school. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Academy Bake Avenue neighborhood is also conveniently located near several major health care providers: University Healthcare System Hospital, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta Surgical Center and Trinity Hospital of Augusta.
In 2007 the City of Augusta opened its first dog park. The off-leash canine social area is in the Pendleton King Park just south of the Academy Bake Avenue neighborhood. The 3.8-acre Central Park on Merry Street offers residents baseball and basketball facilities, a playground and open space. Central Park is also the only municipal park that has a community garden.
The city’s largest shopping center, the Augusta Mall, is on Wrightsboro Road, approximately 15 miles from the Academy Bake Avenue neighborhood. Bus service to the mall is available from the neighborhood. The shopping center is anchored by major retailers Sears, Macy’s, J.C. Penney, and Dillards and is supported by more than 120 stores and eateries.
Churches representing a variety of faiths and denominations are close to Academy Bake Avenue. A few of the houses of worship the neighborhood are St. Ignatius of Antioch, Macedonia Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, the Druid Park Gospel Church, Bethlehem Advent Christian, and the Muslim Community Center.
