Hernando de Soto explored Safety Harbor (then called Worth’s Harbor) in 1539. The area was renamed “Safety Harbor” in the 18th century because when ships reached the harbor, they were finally safe from pirates. One of the first settlers, French Count Odette Phillippe, introduced the grapefruit to Florida in 1823.
Espiritu Santo Springs is a historic springs discovered by de Soto, who named the springs. At the time, de Soto was searching for the Fountain of Youth. During the early 20th century, the spring water was bottled and sold, and a health spa was built over the springs that still exists today – the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa. The site was declared a Historic Landmark in 1964.
