The Pensacola, Florida, neighborhood of Texar Woods is located on the west bank of the Bayou Texar. The lazy waters of the bayou move gently toward Escambia Bay, ending at the Gulf of Mexico. Several boat launches used by canoes and kayaks are located along the banks of this waterway. A visitor center is next to one of the launches. Nearby is the Bayview Dog Park Beach, which is a playground for dogs and their owners.

Families appreciate the three and a half acres of Pintado Park, where baseball, softball, and basketball are popular pastimes. Playground equipment and a walking trail are also available.

The upscale Cordova Mall is located close to the neighborhood. With its 140 stores, 16 restaurants, and free parking, it is a popular shopping destination.

One of the most famous nearby attractions is Gulf Islands National Seashore on Pensacola Bay. The park is open from dawn to dusk for camping, fishing, boating, swimming, and picnics. The Visitor Center has displays of the ecology and wildlife of the area. The historical Fort Pickens is also located in the park. This outpost protected the naval yard built during the Civil War, and was operational until after World War II.

A favorite family attraction is the National Aviation Museum at the Naval Air Station, seven miles west of Pensacola. Visitors can view over 4,000 artifacts and 150 restored aircraft from various military branches. All ages can enjoy the flight simulators and an IMAX theater. An added bonus is the practice sessions of the United States Navy’s famous Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron, held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at the museum site. Admission and parking are free.
