Rosaflora, which loosely translated means “pink flower,” is a community on the shores of Escambia Bay. The community is a work in progress, with only five of the eight oversized lots developed. This is a neighborhood of luxury mansions hiding at the end of long, tree-lined driveways that exit off of Highway 90. Backyards offer lawns that stretch down to the sandy beach, where it’s easy to just jump in a canoe or small boat and head out for a day on the water.
Walking about a half mile down the beach leads to Chimney Park, a registered historic site. The free-standing chimney is all that is left of the Hyer-Knowles Planing Mill. In 1862 Confederate General Braxton Bragg stripped down and then burned the mill and its power plant before evacuating from the Pensacola area. The idea was to not leave anything behind that the Union soldiers could use. In this case, the plan didn’t help either side. The equipment, which had been loaded on barges, was lost during a thunderstorm off the Florida coast. A little farther down the beach is Lavallet Park, which offers almost five acres of open green space, trees, colorful playgrounds, and an off-leash dog park.
The Pensacola Regional Airport and its neighbor, Pensacola State College, are a five minute drive west. Cordova Mall lies next to the college, and the Sacred Heart Health Center is on the other side of the mall. The Roger Scott Athletic Complex sits west of the airport and offers baseball, softball, and football fields, as well as an off-leash dog park. A swimming pool and tennis courts are also available. Scenic Heights Elementary School is the closest school, with J. H. Workman Middle School and Washington High School a little closer to the college and the mall.
