Jacksonville’s Paxon neighborhood has a mixture of single-family residences and commercial buildings. The neighborhood is bounded by West Beaver Street at the south, Ellis Road on the west, and Edgewood Avenue on the east. The northern border extends just beyond West 12th Street. A large concentration of businesses and warehouses can be found along these border streets. Paxon is adjacent to the Woodstock neighborhood which is to the east and south is the Edgewood neighborhood.

Located in the 32254 zip code of Duval County, public schools in the vicinity of Paxon include Biltmore Elementary, Reynolds Lane Elementary, Paxon Middle, and Robert E. Lee High School. Westbrook Library is approximately one mile to the east of the community.

Downtown Jacksonville is situated approximately four miles to the east of Paxon. Downtown provides a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues to area residents. Enrichment activities abound in Downtown which includes many museums like Jacksonville Fire Museum, Jacksonville Historical Center, and Jacksonville Maritime Museum, among others. Florida Theatre, Jacksonville Children’s Chorus, and Jacksonville Expo Center at the Fairgrounds are also located in the Downtown area. Eateries in the area range from small cafes to fine dining establishments.

Paxon takes its name from a school located in the Allendale neighborhood – Paxon School for Advanced Studies. Allendale is situated to the north of Woodstock. The school is located on the historic site that was once Paxon Air Field. This site is where Elizabeth Coleman (a.k.a. Bessie) plummeted to her death after falling from a malfunctioning airplane. Ms. Coleman was the first African-American woman to hold a pilot’s license.
