Herlong Apartments for Rent

The neighborhood of Herlong is located just minutes southwest of Jacksonville, Florida. This community is located west of Interstate 295 and south of Normandy Boulevard. For commuter residents that live in the area, Interstate 295 offers easy access to Interstate 10 and downtown Jacksonville.

Herlong Airport takes up a majority of this land. The airport is located just off Normandy Boulevard, on the north portion of the community. This public airport was first built during World War II for pilot training in the Navy and Air Force. The airport today is primarily a general aviation airport and used for flight training, police aircraft, gliding, sky diving and air charters.

The residential areas of the Herlong community are located in the eastern and southern portions, off of Fouraker Road, Old Middleburg Road, and Noroad. Homes here are primarily ranch-style, built in the 1980s, with new developments built in the area so a home buyer will have no problem finding new two-story homes here as well. Home prices are very affordable in Herlong for those on a tight budget.

Just west of Herlong lies the Naval Air Station Cecil Field, a former United States Naval Base that operated at full capacity during World War II. This Naval Air Station was closed in 1999. Since then, the city of Jacksonville has initiated plans to reuse some of the 23,000 acres available here; portions of the land have been slated for commercial developments.

To the south of Naval Air Station Cecil Field, lies Branan Field Mitigation Park Wildlife and Environmental Area. This 386-acre wildlife area was established in 1989 for the preservation of gopher tortoises. Along the three miles of trails, visitors are sure to spot the tortoises, or at least a glimpse of a wild turkey or white-tailed deer. Jennings State Forest is located here as well and offers visitors a place to hike, bike, canoe or even ride horseback through the forest. The forest is also open to regulated hunting and fishing during designated times.
