South New Haven neighborhood is located south of downtown New Haven, as well as Oyster Point and the New Haven Harbor. The Long Island Sound and the Connecticut Turnpike/Interstate 95 make up the neighborhood’s southern border. The western edge is the West River, extending into Edgewater Park. The northern edge of the neighborhood runs along Chapel Street, the Oak Street Connector, and the Governor John Davis Lodge Turnpike.
Students attend the New Haven Public Schools, which have the largest magnet schools program in Connecticut. Oyster Point is located in this area as well. The Sound School Regional Vocational Aquaculture Center educates students between grades 9 and 12. This vocational high school has opportunities to study aquaculture and the marine trades. It is located in the Oyster Point area of the New Haven Harbor, where the Horizons School also resides.
The Oyster Point Marina lies in New Haven Harbor with 135 slips for boats up to 50 feet in length. The marina lies on the eastern shore of the West River. The Oyster Point Historical District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1989. The 26-acre site is home to 130 buildings that were built by the oystering community between 1840 and 1925.
The neighborhood also includes Bay View Park and its Civil War monument. Amistad Park, Trowbridge Square Park, Long Wharf Park, the Sherman Triangle, and Kimberly Triangle are all located in South New Haven. The Hospital of Saint Raphael lies in the northeastern portion of this district as well.
