North New Haven is an area located north of downtown New Haven. It comprises the neighborhoods of Newhallville, Prospect Hill, East Rock, and Edgerton Park. The area is considered part of the 06511 zip code, and it is located north of Interstate 91. The western border is along Crescent Street, south of Beaver Pond Park. Frances Veitch Memorial Field and Bowen Field are both located on the western edge of the area. Prospect Gardens and Marsh Botanical Gardens are in the southern portion of the neighborhood, and the eastern edge runs into East Rock Park and Edgerton Park.
East Rock neighborhood is populated with many graduate students and faculty from Yale University, who live in the multi-family homes located here. Because of this, many locals call this area “Grad Haven.” An area of historic homes is located along Saint Ronan Street. The neighborhood is served by the Connecticut Transit bus system, as well as by a Yale shuttle. Students attend classes in the New Haven Public Schools. Located nearby is the Worthington Hooker School, which is named after a prominent physician in New Haven’s history.
East Rock Park is popular year-round with walking, hiking and mountain bike trails. In the winter, visitors can cross-country ski or snowshoe. The Trowbridge Environmental Center offers classes and lectures on the geology of the region. Sports enthusiasts can participate in a variety of sports on the many sports fields, including baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, and football. East Rock is over 350 feet above sea level, and visitors can drive to the top from April to November, or enjoy the Giant Step Trail, which leads to the top.
