The Inner Richmond neighborhood is in the western part of San Francisco, directly north of Golden Gate Park. Its boundaries include Arguello Boulevard on the east, Park Presidio Boulevard on the west, California Street on the north, and Golden Gate Park on the south.
The section of Golden Gate Park that adjoins the Inner Richmond neighborhood is one of the park’s most popular, containing the de Young art museum, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers, and a Victorian-style greenhouse. It also has the California Academy of Sciences, which combines a natural science museum with an aquarium and a planetarium.
One block north of California Street is another major park, the Presidio, a 1,491-acre former military post that is now a national park. It is a prime spot for hiking, with some of its many trails offering spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Clement Street is Inner Richmond’s hub for restaurants and shopping. Small, independently owned restaurants offer cuisine from many cultures, especially food from various Asian countries. The area is well known for its good but inexpensive dining, which draws people from all over the city. A number of popular Irish bars are near the neighborhood.
The Richmond branch of the San Francisco Library system was renovated in 2009, with an award-winning restoration of the historic Carnegie building and additional space. The University of San Francisco is a few blocks east of Arguello Boulevard. Regular and express buses run downtown along Geary Boulevard and California Street.
