The larger Richmond District is bound by Fulton Street to the north, Golden Gate Park to the south, Laurel Heights to the east, and Ocean Beach (the Pacific) to the west. This larger district, often called the Avenues, is further divided into two sections, Inner and Outer Richmond, with Park Presidio Boulevard as divider.

The Central Richmond neighborhood is considered to be the area bordered by Lake Street to the north, Fulton Street to the south, Park Presidio to the east, and Twenty-fifth Avenue to the west. A neighborhood group, the Central Richmond District Safety Committee, works toward improving the community.

While there are many housing options, duplexes dating to the 1920s are common, as are stuccos and more expansive Edwardians. This is considered one of the more affordable neighborhoods in San Francisco, which routinely ranks as one of the most expensive cities for real estate in the country.

A central feature of the neighborhood is the Presidio National Park, once a Spanish fort that was continually used as a military facility until 1989, which ended its more than 200 years of military service. In 1996, the Presidio Trust was created to manage most of its interior land, and the National Park Service operates the coastal areas.

Its beautiful woods, scenic views, and stunning coastline make it an ideal recreational environment for Central Richmond residents. There are two environmental centers, the Crissy Field Center, which is used for educational programs and summer camps for school children, and Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.

The Trust also worked with private corporations to take advantage of the existing military structures, and there are plans to create the Letterman Digital Arts Center, which will be the headquarters of Industrial Light and Magic and LucasArts.
