Outer Sunset Neighborhood

Once an area known for its sand dunes, the Outer Sunset became a residential neighborhood when a housing boom followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. A view from the street shows a neighborhood with wide streets and houses built closely together.

Today, the Outer Sunset is a vibrant, affluent, urban suburb with housing to reflect its past. Rows of Spanish-style homes, Edwardians, and modern architecture from the 1940s and 1950s are part of the scenery. The most luxurious homes in the Outer Sunset are built along the Great Highway with stunning views of the shoreline and the Pacific Ocean. Houses, older apartments, condominiums, and townhouses are available for rent. Houses in San Francisco usually have three levels or rooms above garages to house in-laws or other family members. Rooms for rent are available in many private homes.

The neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly, and public and private schools are in walking distance. Despite the traffic, the Outer Sunset has room to walk, bike, or jog. A series of bike trails run through the neighborhood and give visitors access to city attractions like nearby Golden Gate Park. Residents and visitors can walk along the beach or watch San Francisco’s hang gliding community as enthusiasts launch from the cliffs of Fort Funston.

Public transportation is readily available in San Francisco. The neighborhood is covered by MUNI, CalTrain, and BART. The San Francisco International Airport and Amtrak are minutes away.

The major area for retail shopping in the neighborhood is Irving Street.

The Parkside Branch of the San Francisco Library is a general library built next to a small park known as McCoppin Square. Tennis courts are located on the block.

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music holds recitals with classes in the musical arts for adults and children.
