Griffs Glen is an undeveloped parcel of land between Triana Boulevard and Conger Road South West. Redstone Arsenal adjoins the property along the south boundary.
Cummings Research Park is just north of Griffs Glen. Begun in 1962 along with the U. S. Space program, Cummings is an international center for high-tech research. It is the second largest research park in the U. S.
Several new retail centers in Huntsville reflect the trend of pedestrian-friendly shopping. Bridge Street Town Centre not only features upscale shops, but also a luxury hotel, and office space. It has a 10-acre lake and a park-like setting. Parkway Place Mall is anchored by two large department stores along with high-end shops such as Ann Taylor and Williams-Sonoma.
Close to Griffs Glen is The University of Alabama Huntsville, with a student enrollment of about 7,500. The school has strong engineering and science programs and works closely with NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center. The National Space Science and Technology Center is here, too.
Just east are several popular attractions including the historic mansion Burritt on the Mountain, and Monte Sano State Park. Brahan Spring Park is another popular area with a Frisbee golf course, an Olympic size pool, and paddleboats.
There are several large recreational areas around Huntsville. Joe Wheeler State Park and Wheeler Lake lies to the west and Lake Guntersville State Park lies to the east. Both are popular for boating, fishing, hiking and biking. Each park has an 18-hole golf course.
Along with numerous public golf courses, Huntsville has several private clubs. Huntsville Country Club, which opened in the 1920s, and The Ledges Country Club are two of the most popular.
Old Town is on the National Register of Historic Places, notable for the old homes that date to 1829.
