Huntsville at a Glance
Downtown Huntsville Neighborhood
Downtown Huntsville is a mega-district that begins with Big Spring International Park. Huntsville began when a metropolitan liquid, Big Spring, inspired a town. After years of endowments by dignitaries and foreign nationals, the park has become a stately display.
Residents today are fond of another focal point in Big Spring International Park, the fountain. At dark, the whole downtown district becomes impressive, even dramatic, when the lights appear. Each year, the square hosts the Panoply Arts Festival in April and the Big Spring Jam, a music festival, in September.
EarlyWorks Museums are located in the Downtown Huntsville. The Children’s Museum allows kids to drop, shake, snatch, and grab artifacts. The Constitution Village is a exceptional journey of the legends and past of Alabama. The Huntsville Depot and Museum lets visitors see Civil War graffiti, hear a train whistle, and listen to the tracks rattle. The train station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Museum of Art opened an area called Park in the Plaza, which expanded the museum to 52,000 square feet of exhibit, gallery, and meeting space. The museum intentionally created a center where children, teens, and adults can view art, be creative, shop, and dine. The Park in the Plaza transforms art galleries, a museum store, student artwork, and a museum academy into a showcase city of originality.
The Von Braun Center is a stage for the performing arts and a sports arena. Named for a German rocket scientist, it has exhibit halls and concert halls that seat 10,000. Von Braun is home to the Huntsville Havoc Hockey Team and the Alabama Hammers Football Team.
The Old Towne Brewery is a micro-beer brewery. Many small businesses and specialty shops make up the Downtown Huntsville community. Known for diverse restaurants and eateries, the neighborhood is an excellent place to visit with a friend or family member.
Also located in Downtown Huntsville is the Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
