Howard University was established in 1866, shortly after the Civil War, by the First Congregational Society of Washington as a seminary for educating African-American clergymen. The school quickly developed into a university with the approval of President Andrew Johnson in 1867.
Today, Howard University is one of the country’s 48 private Doctoral/Research Extensive universities.
