Watts Hospital-Hillandale Neighborhood

The Watts Hospital – Hillandale neighborhood is located in Durham, North Carolina. This neighborhood’s boundaries begin just west of Mountainview Avenue, and follow the north side of Hillsborough Road east onto Englewood Avenue. A north turn on Broad Street brings these borders to Watts Hospital – Hillandale’s northern boundary of Interstate 85.

Established in 1908, this neighborhood is a National Historic District. A part of the Watts Hospital – Hillandale history includes a 10 acre reservoir and the Durham Waterworks. Built in 1917, this was one of North Carolina’s first modern-equipped municipal waterplants, and its buildings are of architectural significance and otherwise.

A large sector of the western areas of this neighborhood is home to Durham’s oldest golf course, the Hillandale Golf course, dubbed as the Granddaddy of Raleigh-Durham Golf Courses. This public course brings golfers from far and wide, not only for its world class golf, but also to visit its nationally acclaimed golf pro shop.

Not far east of this golf course is the West Ellerbee Creek Trail. This trail is a part of the city’s expanding trail system, and is designed for non-motorized travel. Intentions for this trail system are to connect pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized travelers safely to shopping and other area attractions.

There are three schools in this neighborhood. These are Saint Luke’s Preschool and Kindergarten, Tabernacle of Life Christian School, and the North Carolina School of Science and Math. This final school is a public, residential high school with a specialized curriculum, that now serves as a model for schools around the globe.
