San Jose Neighborhood

Snug along the eastern shore of the St. Johns River, the neighborhood of San Jose is one of Jacksonville’s most popular. San Jose Boulevard and St. Augustine Road run along the west side of the neighborhood, while Powers Avenue stretches along the east. University Boulevard West is the northern border of San Jose, while Ferrarra Street is the southern border.

When you move to an apartment in San Jose, you’ll appreciate this mixed-use riverfront neighborhood’s distinctive charm. Trees line shady, narrow drives that lead past a variety of home styles, open green space, and lush tropical landscaping. Moss-covered oak trees stand next to tall, slender palm trees while smaller, Florida-style homes give way to palatial estates behind wrought-iron gates. Apartment communities are disbursed throughout the San Jose neighborhood, as are commercial areas filled with shops, restaurants, and businesses.

The St. Johns River is ideal for water sports, such as water-skiing, boating, swimming, and fishing. The San Jose Country Club is also located in San Jose and is one of Jacksonville’s premier destinations for golf, tennis, swimming, and fine dining. San Jose is also home to the Epping-Forest Yacht Club, which offers a world-class marina, fitness center, tennis courts, swimming pool, and a variety of restaurants ranging from café-style to gourmet.

If you are moving to a San Jose apartment with kids, the Bolles School is located between the river and the country club. This is a private preparatory school (day and boarding) that dates back to 1933, when it started as an all-boys military academy. San Jose Catholic School, Samuel W. Wolfson High School, and Kings Trail Elementary School are also located in the neighborhood. Alfred I. Dupont Middle School is located just outside the San Jose neighborhood, along Dupont Avenue.

When searching for apartments in San Jose, keep in mind this is a fairly large and diverse neighborhood. If you want to be close to restaurants and shops, the north side of the neighborhood (along University Boulevard) is home to a variety of places, including Whataburger, a Pet Supermarket, a Krispy Kreme, and a Bealls Outlet. University Boulevard is a main road that leads to I-95, ideal for going into downtown Jacksonville, located about eight miles north of San Jose.

Dupont Avenue is also a busy commercial district with a variety of shops and restaurants, including Mc B’s Lounge, Pepe’s Hacienda, and the Athens Café. The south side – especially around the country club and along the river – is mainly residential.
