Alta Vista Neighborhood
The Alta Vista area in Arvada, Colo., is located in Jefferson County. The ZIP code is 80004. This neighborhood lies just to the north of West 58th Avenue and to the south of Oberon Road.
The area is just a short 20-minute drive to downtown Denver, which makes it convenient for many residents that commute to the city for work. The Amtrak California Zephyr passes through the city of Armada westbound each morning and eastbound each evening. This route travels through the scenic Rocky Mountains and is one of the most popular rail routes in the United States. The Denver Regional Transportation District serves Armada and the Alta Vista area with local, express, and regional bus routes. The RTD plans to provide the area with a commuter rail line by 2015.
In 1850, the first documented discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountain region occurred here in Arvada and specifically in the Alta Vista area. Lewis Ralston found about a quarter ounce in Clear Creek, then worth about $5. Ralston’s companions named the stream Ralston’s Creek in his honor. To this day, in the Alta Vista neighborhood, Ralston is a popular name. Ralston Road, Ralston Recreational Area, and Ralston Cove Park all hold this gold-seeker’s name.
Due to gold being discovered in the area, Arvada attracted many settlers throughout the 1800s, and the area turned into a vibrant agricultural community. Crops that thrived here were wheat, corn, oats, plums, celery, cherries, berries, melons, strawberries, and various vegetables. In fact, Arvada was once known as the “Celery Capital of the World.” Over the years, Arvada has morphed into a thriving suburb of more than 100,000 people.
Parks are plentiful in the area. Ralston Cove Park offers 7.5 acres along Ralston Creek, a playground, and picnicking areas. Hoskinson Park, Fitzmorris Park, and Independence Park are also located nearby. Harold Lutz Sports Complex is located just to the southwest of Alta Vista and is home to multiple football and baseball fields for area residents as well as a batting cage. If golf is your pastime of choice, Indian Tree Golf Club is located just to the northeast of Alta Vista.
Area shopping for the Alta Vista area includes Arvada Square Shopping Center and Arvada Plaza Center.
