Ravenna Neighborhood

The Ravenna neighborhood is located just north of Seattle’s University District. Ravenna was originally a separate town, incorporated in 1906, but it was annexed by the city of Seattle in 1907. Because of its proximity to the University of Washington, it is home to many students and faculty who utilize the neighborhood’s easy car routes, bus routes, and the bike trails linking the areas. The popular Burke Gilman Trail runs near the neighborhood, carrying bikers west to Ballard and east to the suburbs of Seattle. The Calvary Cemetery bounds the southern area of this neighborhood.

The area is home to a number of parks, one named for the neighborhood itself. Ravenna Park covers a scenic ravine near Ravenna Boulevard, with Ravenna Creek flowing through it. Cowen Park sits at the south end of Ravenna Park. One of the neighborhood’s streets, Park Road, with its elaborate Christmas displays, becomes known as “Candy Cane Lane” during the holiday season.

Shoppers populate the extensive University Village shopping mall, which lies on the busy 65th Street. Other shopping areas are located on 55th Street as well. The Ravenna Eckstein Community Center hosts many neighborhood events and classes.

Students in the area attend Roosevelt High School after graduating from Eckstein Middle School and Bryant Elementary. The Perkins School for Children is also located in Ravenna, as is University Prep. The Ravenna School, built on 63rd Street in 1870, was later sold to the City of Seattle and is now an apartment complex.
