The first military aircraft ever flown was flown from Fort Sam Houston in 1910.
Fort Sam Houston has earned a reputation for excellence in medicine, because it has a surgical burn unit that is said to be one of the best in the entire United States. The important Center for the Intrepid, which opened in January of 2007, is also located on the base. Laboratories for military performance, occupational and physical therapy are located in the center, as is the prosthetic facility and the behavioral care center.
This community is just a short distance from the 343+ acre Brackenridge Park, home to the Japanese Tea Garden, a year round garden that has koi ponds, a 60 foot waterfall, a stone bridge and walkways. The garden is well shaded to provide visitors with protection from the hot south Texas sun. The San Antonio Zoo is also located in Brackenridge Park. The zoo has the usual mammals, reptiles and amphibians, but it also has a spectacular bird collection that includes some very unusual birds, such as a Madagascar partridge and a Malayan peacock pheasant. Brackenridge Park also has places to fish and athletic fields, among other attractions.
