Upper Mesa Hills Neighborhood

Located in the foothills just west of the Franklin Mountains, Upper Mesa Hills is artsy, sophisticated and one of the most upscale neighborhoods in El Paso. Most of the development took place between 1970 and 1994 and the property of choice was, and still is high-rise apartments and spread out low rise multi-family complexes. A few older, large, mansion style homes remain from the early 1900s from before the land was annexed to the city of El Paso.

This is a very private neighborhood. Because of the terrain, in some cases, such as along Lawndale Drive or Oak Cliff Drive, there is a considerable amount of land between properties. Some properties also offer commanding views of the surrounding countryside and the city below.

Upper Mesa Hills is largely residential. Stores, shops, and restaurants in the neighborhood are confined to North Mesa Street in the southwest and Shadow Mountain Drive to the west. Some locally owned eateries are the Koze Teppan Grill, Thyme Matters, and Pelican’s Restaurant, specializing in seafood. Fast food outlets along North Mesa Street include Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell. North Mesa Street is also home to the Coronado Shopping Center, home of Walgreens, Big 8 Foods, and even more eating options.

Schools in the neighborhood include Green Elementary on Buckley Drive, Morehead Middle School on North Mesa Street, and Western Hills Methodist Day School off of Silver Springs Drive. Nearby houses of worship include St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church both on North Mesa Street, and the Coronado Baptist Church on Westwind Drive.
