North Lamar Neighborhood in Austin, TX

North Lamar Neighborhood

Though mostly densely-populated, North Lamar manages to be a hidden residential gem in the center of Austin. Bordered to the west by Lamar Boulevard and to the South by Rundberg Lane, the North Lamar area is made up primarily by the 78758 zip code with part of its eastern border residing in the 78753 zip code. It also has easy access to the eastern border of Interstate Highway 35 and stops at Braker Lane to the north. Even though being contained by major streets, the North Lamar neighborhood manages to be surprisingly quiet and secluded, while being only a few blocks away from busy intersections.

Despite its proximity to major thoroughfares, North Lamar is surprisingly serene and green with trees. Along North Lamar Boulevard, commercial establishments line the area, including fast food chains like Burger King, Domino’s Pizza, and McDonald’s. There are also a number of local retailers like automobile repair shops, bars and pubs, and Asian supermarkets. An abundance of Asian specialty restaurants and markets can be found in this area. Local favorite Indian restaurant, Swad, is in the southwestern corner of this neighborhood.

Residential areas are located two blocks off from Lamar Street, and houses in the area are made up of single-story bungalows and larger, four-plex apartments. There are also a few larger apartment complexes in the northern part of the area. Families with school-aged children will note that this neighborhood is located within the Austin Independent School District.

The area does have well-kept sidewalks on the major border streets, and this area, while urban, is pedestrian-friendly. Because Lamar Boulevard is heavily trafficked, staying off of main roads will increase safety when walking in this area. There is no designated bike lane and a very small shoulder on this major street, so cyclists may want to walk their bikes along the sidewalk until the shoulder is widened.
