Bordered by Loop 1, Highway 183, and Capital of Texas Highway, the Gateway area is a triangular, commercial center full of retail and entertainment businesses. Home to the Gateway Center, this pedestrian-friendly shopping area contains the Regal Cinemas Gateway 16 movie theater and large retail stores, including Best Buy, Crate & Barrel, and Pier 1.

There are a number of restaurants serving various cuisines in the area from dine-in, upscale restaurants to fast food. Gateway does have some local eateries but is mainly home to well-established restaurant chains. Panera Bread and Marie Callendar’s serve home-style American cuisine while Sushi Sake and Baby Acapulco offer more exotic, Japanese and Mexican fare, respectively.

In addition to a variety of restaurants, the eastern side of Gateway has several major hotel chains, including Embassy Suites and the Hyatt Summerfield Suites.

Stonelake Boulevard runs through the center of the area, dividing the Gateway Center into manageable sections for pedestrians and cyclists. The abundance of parking and convenient layout make it easy to drive from one area to another, though it can get crowded after business hours and on weekends.

Whole Foods is a major draw for the Gateway area. Health-conscious Austinites don’t have to brave rush hour traffic to visit health food stores in the downtown area. That, along with REI Inc., makes this area perfect for those interested in staying active and following a healthy lifestyle.

Despite being in the middle of an urban jungle, Gateway is surprisingly green with grassy medians and trees lining the streets. From the center of Stonelake Boulevard, you can’t hear the highway noise and would think that you’re tucked into a small commercial pocket within a larger residential area. With easy access to the rest of Austin, Gateway is a nice getaway for a shopper who enjoys a somewhat secluded experience that offers convenient retail and entertainment options.
