A nature center, gardens, and nature trails are part of the sanctuary. It is a delight for hikers and equestrians since hiking and bridle paths are part of the area. There are scenic drives available in the parks for motorists.

Fisk University was founded in 1866, and its graduates include educator Booker T. Washington, poet Nikki Giovanni and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The Aaron Douglas Gallery in the university library has exhibits of African, African-American and European art. The Carl Van Vechten Gallery on campus has works by world-famous artists Paul Cezanne, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre August Renoir.
