Located across the Reedy River, the West End neighborhood of Greenville was originally home to the manufacturing hub of the city. Following the Civil War, this area was not only the location for railway transportation, but also the site for cotton and fertilizer production. In later years, the West End’s business interests turned to automobile parts and soft drink industries to sustain the area.

By the 1930s, the West End had transformed again into a commercial area, with plenty of arts and entertainment as well. In the early 1990s, the neighborhood again underwent a renovation. Today, it is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the city. Pedestrian-friendly, this charming community is filled with activity, including shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Some of the neighborhood’s cultural offerings include Art Crossing at RiverPlace, a colony of working art studios with local artists offering their work for sale; South Carolina’s Children’s Theater; Midtown Artery, a gallery that sells both local and international modern art; The Warehouse Theatre, a performance space for Greenville’s professional theater company; and the Fountain at RiverPlace, a water-based delight that invites area children to splash around and enjoy its changing height and patterns of movement.

Art in the West End isn’t limited to galleries and museums. Among the neighborhood’s newest projects are street tiles embedded in sidewalks throughout the community to tell the historical stories of the area. Local artist Suzanne Vitti is the force behind this outdoor art.

Another outdoor attraction is Falls Park. This West End park is an urban retreat in the middle of a busy commercial center. Falls Park features beautiful nature trails and picnic areas and scenic views of the Reedy River, along with waterfalls and the Liberty Bridge, a pedestrian suspension bridge with great river views.
