Pleasant Valley is a rural community in Cherokee County, North Carolina. Centrally located between the Nantahala National Forest to the north and the Chattahoochee National Forest to the south, it is surrounded by the natural landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains. State Road 64 connects Pleasant Valley residents with Interstate 75 to the west and Interstate 26 to the east.
Pleasant Valley Road takes residents to the town of Murphy, less than two miles to the south. In 1836, Murphy was the location of Fort Butler, which was instrumental during the United States Army’s relocation of the Cherokee Indians who originally settled the land. Murphy has a wide variety of shops, restaurants, churches, and schools.
Nearby Murphy Elementary School, on Valley River Avenue, serves the community. Northward on Valley River Road is the Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center. Personal trainers and aerobics classes are available Monday through Saturday. It also has programs for kids, a pool, and health seminars. Area places of worship include Free Methodist Church and Murphy Bible Church.
The Pleasant Valley Shopping Center has a Save-a-Lot grocery store, a Family Dollar store, a Party Outlet, a bank, and an urgent-care medical center. For residents who prefer to do their shopping under one roof, there is a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Pleasant Valley Road.
The community is a popular location for tourists visiting the national parks in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, and families who prefer rural living in a quiet, natural setting.
